Integration of Water Cooled Compressor to Submarine
Download PDF
Submarines use electric energy (Direct Current-DC) supplied from diesel engines for propulsion. Electrical energy is collected in batteries and transmitted to electric motors. Electric motors provide movement because the diesel engine cannot work under water (due to the air required for the diesel engine to operate).Turkey´s first 1,500 l/min compact, water-cooled high pressure air compressor, which was developed under the TUBITAK TEYDEB 1507-SME RDI (Research Development & Innovation) Grant Program, is run by an AC (Alternating Current) electric motor. As a result, the compressor is not suited for submarines that require a strong starting torque and have Direct Current (DC).The Water Cooled DC Motor High Pressure Air Compressor, which has successfully completed R&D studies and has a high locality rate (min 70%), has the distinction of being the first domestic compressor to be utilized under water in the Turkish navy's inventory.
